Pricing and Underwriting apprenticeship pathway

Turning uncertainty into stability

Tap into your brilliance every day

Is Pricing and Underwriting right for you?

At Aviva, we’re here to protect what matters most whether that’s your home, your car, your business, or something a bit more specialist. Every insurance policy starts with a decision: should we cover this, and if so, what’s the right price?

That’s where our Underwriting and Pricing teams come in.

Underwriting is all about making confident, informed decisions. As an underwriter you’ll assess risks based on the type of cover we’re giving, the likelihood of something bad happening, the value of what’s being insured, and the customer’s history of making claims. You’ll negotiate terms and decide whether we should offer cover. It’s a mix of analysis, curiosity and great people skills.

Pricing is more about the numbers. You’ll dive into data, build predictive models, and use market insight to calculate fair and competitive prices. It’s perfect if you love getting stuck into the detail and solving tricky problems.

Whether you’re more into people or data, this pathway gives you the chance to explore both sides – and find out where you shine.

Salary:£26,700
Duration: Permanent role from day one with three year learning programme.
Locations: Perth, Norwich, York, London

What you can expect

From day one, you’ll be learning loads, getting stuck in, and making a real impact. You’ll train alongside experienced underwriters and pricing professionals, gaining hands-on experience and learning how we assess risk and set prices. Along the way, you’ll explore topics – from global trade to climate change and how world events can affect insurance.

You’ll also get to grips with the financial side of how insurance works. We’ll support you every step of the way. You’ll have support and guidance from coaches and senior leaders as well as access to data tools, and the chance to work across teams. You might even rotate into different areas, to help you figure out what you enjoy most and where your strengths lie.

We’re here to help you build the skills and knowledge you need to grow your career. You’ll be part of a supportive environment where you can stretch yourself, learn new skills and try new things, and build strong connections. From approachable leaders to supportive colleagues, you’ll find encouragement at every step.

Along with formal study time, you’ll learn on the job, gaining real-life experience working within our expert teams. Which means you’ll be empowered to own your work, but you won’t do it alone. You’ll have supportive people all around you, every step of the way.

We don’t expect you to have had any previous industry experience – the apprenticeship and your on the job learning will teach you everything you need to know. Right now, we’re more interested in your passion, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn.

You’ll spend 80% of your time working in the role and 20% working towards your qualifications. For pricing its likely you’ll study the Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship and for Underwriting roles, the Level 3 Insurance Professional Apprenticeship qualification – you’ll also get a Certificate in Insurance from the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Where you’ll be based

We have Pricing and Underwriting apprentice opportunities in our London, Norwich, Perth and York offices.  Not all roles are available in every location, see our advert for more details.

After your training period the likelihood is you’ll balance time in the office with working from home.

Wherever you’re based, the likelihood is you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. Three days in the office and two days from home every week is typical, but this will vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you, and agree what works best for you, your team, and the business.

Even with our Smart Working approach, it’s important to note you’ll still need to live within commuting distance of your contracted office. That way you’ll get to spend time with your team in person, as well as virtually, and get access to the right internal support networks to help you to succeed.
